Waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)

Waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has been identified as a priority waste stream by the European Commission due to its potentially hazardous nature, the consumption of resources used during the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment and the expected WEEE growth rates. Prior to the introduction of the WEEE Regulations 2005 much of the electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Ireland was disposed of in the municipal waste stream directly to landfill. This is not an ideal solution as WEEE can contain harmful substances that could cause problems to human health and the environment if not treated properly on disposal. In addition production of EEE involves non renewable energy and raw material resources which cannot be recovered if WEEE is disposed of indiscriminately. The WEEE Directive aims to reduce quantities of WEEE disposed of to landfill and reduce the harmful effects caused by WEEE on health and the environment whilst conserving natural resources.

Product Recycling Fund (PRF)

Directive of the European Parliament on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) From Saturday, August 13th 2005 under new WEEE Regulations regarding the composition of electrical and electronic equipment and the elimination of resulting waste, the WEEE recycling value chain is effective. From this day on we must improve the preservation of the environment and avoid waste of primary materials.
New Regulation: Separate collection: An adapted treatment This regulation supports recyclable-waste collection of electrical and electronic equipment and appropriate consequential processing, with a view to recycle and reuse the waste. Dangerous components from some equipment can be isolated using an adapted treatment and the product can be better recycled.
Financing of the recycling value chain Environmental Management costs are being introduced under the 2002 EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) to fund the recycling, processing and safe disposal of old electronic equipment The amount corresponds to the cost of recycling for an end-of-life product and is entirely given to the compliance scheme for waste from electrical and electronic equipment in charge of recycling the end-of-life product. The amount may vary mostly depending on the category.

Recyclable-waste collection for end-of-life products

This selective collection will ensure the recycling of current products on the market once they reach the end-of-life stage. Localmusic.ie offers to collect your electrical or electronic end-of-life products for free. In order to arrange for a free take-back, please contact our Customer Service by e-mail at info@ocalmusic.ie

Conditions for collecting end-of-life goods

The system is based on "1 product collected for the purchase of 1 product". Products must be from a similar category or have the same function. For example, if you purchase an amplifier, we will take your old amplifier back and ensure free recycling in an ecological manner. If you purchase a guitar, we will not take back your old amplifier. You will be notified 24 hours before the collection of your product by Dpd Ireland. Please ensure that the old product has been cleaned and disconnected from any utilities and is ready for immediate collection. Local authorities accept household WEEE free of charge at its civic amenity site from members of the public. For more information about removal services or areas where products can be brought to in their local area, please contact your local authority. Check out the website www.weeeireland.ie for more information.
